House Fire Prompts Safety Reminder from Rochester Fire Department

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Rochester Fire Department has issued a reminder to the community following a house fire on Tuesday.

A news release says firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 4:30 p.m. Arriving crews found light smoke coming from the home.

The fire broke out at a residence in the 2400 block of Parkview Ln. Southeast. Firefighters entered the room where the fire had started and discovered the flames were out, the news release says.

Crews ventilated and overhauled the home. No injuries were reported. A damage estimate has not yet been determined.

The cause of the fire was not released, however the Rochester Fire Department is using the fire to remind the community of the importance of safe smoking.

Smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires in Minnesota with cigarettes in bedrooms and living rooms blamed for starting most of those fires, according to the Minnesota Fire Marshal’s Office.

Smokers are asked to smoke outside of their homes and to dispose of their cigarettes in a deep and sturdy ash tray filled with water or sand. Smokers are also asked not to smoke while using medical oxygen or near medical oxygen.

The Rochester Police Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Rochester Public Utilities and the American Red Cross also responded to the fire.
