That’s according to a news release published on Wednesday by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say a group of wild ricers found the skeletal remains on Saturday evening.
The ricers made the discovery along the eastern shoreline of Leech Lake. No criminal activity is suspected as the remains are believed to have been there for hundreds of years, the news release indicates.
Responding deputies alerted members of the Leech Lake Heritage Sites program to the discovery.
Representatives from the organization confirmed the law enforcement’s preliminary assessment and took steps to secure the remains, the news release says.
Officials also contacted the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council to assist with the processing of the remains.
The news release does not list the specific location of the discovery, however authorities say the remains were found on a known cultural site in the area of the Leech Lake Reservation.
The incident is under investigation. Authorities are using the discovery to remind the public to not disturb the site of a human remains discovery.
