New Flyover Ramp Opens at I-90/Hwy. 52 Interchange Southeast of Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The main feature of a project to transform the Interstate 90/Hwy. 52 interchange southeast of Rochester is now open.

Part of the three year, more than $27 million project was to construct a flyover ramp to eliminate a large majority of left turns made by drivers passing through the interchange. 

A news release issued by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) says the ramp opened to traffic on Wednesday.

Flyover Ramp Connecting Southbound Hwy. 52 to Eastbound I-90 Opens Southeast of Rochester

Motorists can now use the new flyover ramp to enter eastbound I-90 from southbound Hwy. 52. 

MnDOT says 92% of the left turns at the interchange were by southbound Hwy. 52 drivers entering eastbound I-90.

The left turn had a “a history of highway-speed, right-angle crashes, the type that can often cause serious injury or be fatal,” MnDOT says. 

How Navigate New Traffic Patterns at Interchange

Southbound Hwy. 52 drivers seeking I-90 East will now use the right lane to enter the interstate. Drivers entering eastbound I-90 from northbound Hwy. 52 will use the right lane. 

Traffic wishing to continue on Hwy. 52 will use the left lane. 

Construction Continues

The project is in its final year. Crews are continuing work on reconstruction the westbound I-90 overpass at the interchange.

The off-ramp from westbound I-90 to northbound Hwy. 52 towards Rochester closed earlier this month to accommodate improvements.

The closure is scheduled to last until late August.
