Mankato Apartment Fire Could Lead to Child Endangerment Charges
Mankato, MN (KROC-AM News) - Authorities in Mankato say a weekend fire is expected to result in the prosecution of a woman for alleged child endangerment.
Residents evacuate as heavy smoke fills building
A news release says the Mankato police and fire departments, along with a Mayo Clinic ambulance, responded to a report of a fire at the Cherry Ridge Apartments around 11:50 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived at the scene, emergency responders reported that a number of the apartment building's residents had already evacuated the building in response to the fire alarms and the presence of heavy smoke.
Firefighters find woman and three children
When firefighters entered the apartment where the fire was located, the news release says they located an adult woman and three juveniles. The woman was described as nonresponsive and had to be assisted out of the building by first responders.
Child calls 911 after oven catches fire
An investigation determined that one of the children called 911 after the oven in the apartment caught fire. The fire was contained to the oven, but the entire building required ventilation due to the heavy smoke.
Mankato Public Safety officials reported that several residents of the apartment building were evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation by Mayo Clinic ambulance personnel. No one required hospitalization.
The incident remains under investigation.
