Mayo Civic Center Parking Lot to Permanently Close August 15 For Rochester Housing Development

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The City of Rochester on Friday has announced the date when a parking lot near the Mayo Civic Center will permanently close.

On Saturday, August 15, the Civic Center North parking lot, located north of the Mayo Civic Center along East Center St., will be closed for good. 

The Rochester Honkers regular home games and the Riverside Music Series will be done by the time the closure date arrives.

City officials are encouraging motorists who parked in the 193-space lot to use the eastern side of the Civic Center South lot, which is located at 401 4th St. SE. 

There are also daily and monthly parking options available in the downtown’s parking ramps. 

The land occupied by the parking lot is slated to become a housing development. 

Housing Development Plans

Minneapolis-based developer Sherman and Associates is set to construct a 15-story tower with 265 market-rate units and a five-story mid-rise building containing 76 units of senior housing at 30%, 50%, and 60% area median income.

The development plans also include a parking structure that would house 362 stalls that would be shared by the residents of the two buildings. 

In June of 2024, Rochester City Council members authorized $13.5 million in tax increment financing for the project and committed $3 million in Destination Medical Center funds for the development.

Sherman and Associates website indicates construction on the $140 million project is expected to begin this year.
