Minnesota Women Allegedly Kidnapped & Assaulted Man Over 3 Days
Hibbing, MN (KROC-AM News) - Two northern Minnesota women have been charged with kidnapping a man and holding him captive for three days.
44-year-old Corrine Starc of Iron was arraigned today in St. Louis County Court on kidnapping, second-degree assault, false imprisonment, and threats of violence charges. 39-year-old Shelley Goerdt, who is also from Iron, is charged with abetting kidnapping, second-degree assault, and false imprisonment. Both women were released without bail.
According to the criminal complaint, Hibbing police officers responded to a gas station Monday morning after a man walked into the business and stated that he had been kidnapped and shocked with a Taser. The responding officers found a man with blood on his face and injuries to his legs.
The man, who told the officers he was freezing, immediately asked to be transported to the hospital. The court document says the officers noted the man was pale and visibly shaking. He explained that he had managed to escape from a home in Hibbing after three days of captivity and had just come from a nearby garage where he had been hiding from the two women.
According to the victim, he was lured to the home by Goerdt, who told him that she was pregnant and that she had information about the victim's father. He alleges that Goerdt took him to a bathroom that needed some work and then took his phone away from him after he discovered black plastic bags all over the floor and became suspicious.
The charges allege Goerdt then shocked him with a flashlight equipped with a Taser before tying him to a chair using duct tape, rope, and a chain. The victim also told police his upper body was bound using saran wrap to further immobilize his arms.
Over the next three days, the victim alleges he was struck on the face with the flashlight-taser and was shocked on different parts of his body. The court record also indicates the man was subjected to heavy metal music played at high volume or forced to listen to a preacher chanting Scripture from a cell phone that was taped to the wall.
The also related to the police that, on one occasion, he was untied on one occasion and was ordered at gunpoint to move from the bathroom into a bedroom where he was tied to a bed.
According to the charges, the man eventually managed to get his hands free and escape from the house. The told Hibbing police that Goerdt and Starc were driving around in a van looking for him, which prompted him to hide until he deemed it safe enough to go to the convenience store and call 911.
The search warrant was executed at the Hibbing residence Monday afternoon, where Starc and Goerdt were taken into custody. Court documents indicate the search led to the discovery of a cell phone taped to the back of the bed. Investigators also found a 9 mm pistol and four boxes of ammunition, along with a rechargeable flashlight-Taser combination.
Both women have been ordered to return to court later this month.
