RPU: No Signs of Cyberattack on Rochester Water System

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Public Utilities is indicating that it has not identified any evidence that its systems have been affected by a cyberattack.

RPU issued a statement today in response to reports of dozens of cybersecurity incidents affecting more than 30 community water systems in Minnesota. The news release indicates the municipal utility continues to closely monitor the situation.

Water Utility Monitoring Minnesota Incidents

According to RPU, its information technology and operational teams continue to monitor its systems and review information provided by state, federal, and industry cybersecurity partners as the investigation into the Minnesota incidents continues.

“Protecting the safety and reliability of Rochester’s utility services is a top priority,” said Tim McCollough, RPU general manager. “RPU maintains established cybersecurity safeguards and incident response procedures, and our teams remain vigilant as we continue to monitor this situation.”

The news release also states that RPU will take appropriate action if any related activity is detected and will provide additional information if circumstances change. RPU currently provides water service to more than 42,000 customers in Rochester.

Minnesota IT Services Responds to Attacks

Minnesota IT Services earlier announced that it had activated its coordinated cyber response capabilities in response to the cyberattacks on the community water systems. While national media outlets have reported that some federal officials suspect possible Iranian involvement in the cyberattacks, the Minnesota agency says it has not attributed the activity to a specific actor.

No Impact on Customers

At this time, Minnesota IT Services is not aware of any active requests from community water systems for residents to modify their drinking water use as a result of the malicious activity.
