The Massively Complex System That Powers Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Supplying Rochester’s electrical power needs is incredibly complex.
Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) General Manager Tim McCollough, in one of his regular monthly appearances on Rochester Today with Andy Brownell on News-Talk 1340 KROC-AM and 96.9 FM, shared his knowledge of the infrastructure that allows us to simply “flip a switch” and power our homes and businesses.

Rising Demand and Costs Challenge Rochester Utilities
The discussion is especially timely, as RPU and the City of Rochester grapple with significant challenges in meeting the community’s power needs in an affordable, reliable, and responsible fashion. RPU is currently considering adopting a budget plan that calls for 6% annual increases in electric rates over the next five years. The hikes aim to address rising costs faced by electric utilities nationwide, driven by the push for renewable energy sources, higher-than-expected demand from data centers and other users, and other inflationary pressures.

Breaking Down the Complexities of Power Distribution
McCollough not only described the basics of electrical power generation and distribution, but also the intricate connections involved in the power grid that delivers the energy needed to power our lights, appliances, other devices, and even portions of our transportation system. While the grid is national in scope, most of Rochester’s activity is tied to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO.

MISO is a massive consortium of power utilities across the central United States that combines generation facilities with distribution systems to deliver energy to its members, including Rochester Public Utilities, in the most efficient, reliable, and affordable way. With his expertise, McCollough offered a fascinating explanation of how this immensely complex system operates to supply our power needs—while also setting the price of electricity on a daily, hourly, and even minute-by-minute basis.
