
RPU to Begin 3-Year Water and Electric Advanced Meter Upgrade
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Public Utilities is gearing up for a major, multiyear project to replace all of the electric and water meters in its system.
RPU General Manager Tim McCollough was a recent guest on News Talk 1340 KROC-AM and 96.9 FM with Andy Brownell on the Rochester Today show to share information about the upcoming initiative.
RPU will begin installing new advanced meters next year in all homes and businesses receiving electric and water service from the public utility. The new devices will have the capability of communicating directly with RPU through a secure two-way network that will allow for remote meter reading, quicker detection of power outages, early identification of service quality issues, and eventually give customers access to detailed usage data.
The electric meter installation process is expected to be fairly quick and easy for the majority of RPU customers. The utility says installation usually takes less than 15 minutes, although some may require a brief disconnection of electrical service. The work is done outside the home and no appointment is needed.

The installation of the water meters will require appointments, as the meters are located inside homes and businesses. RPU says the process is expected to take 30 to 60 minutes for each installation
The meter replacement project is expected to take about three years to complete. The work will be performed by a contractor called WESCO, and all of its employees will be carrying identification and wearing uniforms or badges.
RPU, on its website, has posted two short installation videos about the water and electric meter upgrades.
