Rochester Public Utilities Issues Energy Conservation Alert
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The heat wave impacting the Upper Midwest is significantly increasing the demand for electricity throughout the region, and Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) is asking customers to voluntarily conserve energy to help reduce strain on the regional electric power grid.
The RPU request covers the peak demand period, which runs approximately from 3-8 p.m.

The municipal utility has listed a number of steps customers can take to help reduce demand:
- Set your thermostat a few degrees higher (78°F is recommended when safe and comfortable).
- Use ceiling fans to improve air circulation and reduce air conditioning use.
- Delay running large appliances, such as dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers, and ovens, until after the peak demand period.
- Turn off unnecessary lights, televisions, and electronics when not in use.
- Close blinds, curtains, and shades to help keep your home cooler.
- Charge electric vehicles after the peak demand period or overnight.

RPU says it will continue monitoring regional power grid conditions and will provide updates as needed. The request for voluntary conservation notes that "small actions taken across the community can make a meaningful difference and reduce overall electricity demand."
