
RPU Studying Options to Expand Rochester’s Water Supply
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Public Utilities is engaged in an expansive study of water resources in southeastern Minnesota and how to meet Rochester's water needs in the future.

RPU General Manager Tim McCullough recently joined Andy Brownell for another episode of RPU Unplugged during Rochester Today on News-Talk 1340 KROC-AM and 96.9 FM to talk about the study and how Rochester currently meets its water demands.

RPU study nears key stage this fall
McCullough says the study began about two years ago and is nearing the stage where enough data will be available to explore options for expanding Rochester's water supply and addressing any treatment requirements. He says that he anticipates bringing an update with the findings to the RPU Board and Rochester City Council this fall.

Jordan aquifer remains Rochester's water source
He explains that, due to a potential impact on rivers, streams, and wetlands from pulling water from the Jordan aquifer, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources mandated that the study be conducted before Rochester is given authorization to drill any additional wells into the aquifer or other water resources. According to McCullough, Rochester operates one of the largest groundwater systems in the state and has been exclusively supplying the community's water by tapping into underground aquifers, with the Jordan aquifer located approximately 450 feet underground.

Computer modeling will assess groundwater impacts
The current study encompasses approximately 1,500 square miles of land around Rochester and will utilize sophisticated computer modeling to gauge whether pulling additional water from the Jordan aquifer will impact surface waters. The study will also explore drilling even deeper into another aquifer or possibly pulling water from Zumbro or Mississippi Rivers to meet the growing demand for water in Rochester.
RPU studying potential costs of water treatment
McCullough also explains that any of those options, including the continued use of the Jordan aquifer, will likely require additional treatment of the water used by the community. The study includes an exploration of those treatment needs and the costs of treatment facilities.
