Austin Woman Admits to Impersonating Dead Mother in Fraud Scheme

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News)- A southeast Minnesota woman who was impersonating her deceased mother has pleaded guilty in a federal fraud case.

That’s according to a news release issued Monday afternoon by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota.
Federal court documents allege the scheme to steal taxpayer dollars spanned multiple decades.
Austin, MN Woman Admits to Stealing Hundreds of Thousands Dollars of Social Security Funds Over 25 Years
54-year-old Mavious Redmond of Austin has pleaded guilty to theft of government funds.
She was accused of collecting social security benefits under her mother’s name for 25 years after her mother’s death, which happened in January of 1999.
Federal prosecutors alleged the fraud scheme involved her impersonating her mother during two trips to a Social Security Administration Office this past June.
She’s accused of filling out an application by filling in her mother’s information and forging her signature.
In all Redmond is accused of swindling $360,000 in Social Security funds.
“We are awash in federal programs fraud,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick. “Redmond stole well more than a quarter million dollars in taxpayer funds. She scammed social security for literal decades.”
Redmond formally entered the guilty plea last week. She is scheduled to be sentenced at a later time.
