Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Stewartville man has been sentenced to five years on probation for a felony assault conviction stemming from a mugging that nearly cost the victim an eye.

22-year-old Mohamed Ismail Mohamed previously entered a guilty plea to a third-degree assault charge in the case. He was accused of attacking a 60-year-old Michigan man while the victim was returning to his hotel in downtown Rochester on the night of June 28, 2021. According to the criminal complaint, Mohamed confronted the man in the lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn and began punching him in the head after demanding money from the victim.

The court document says some witnesses then intervene and held Mohamed until police officers arrived at the scene. One of the officers later noticed that he saw blood running from the victim's face as he was sitting on the floor next to the front desk. The officer also stated that the man's "left eye was swollen shut and it looked to be protruding from his skull."

Mohamed was given a 117-day jail sentence, but that has been satisfied by the time he is already spent in jail. He was ordered to pay more than $3400 in restitution.
