A news release issued by RPU Tuesday morning says an estimated 7,000 customers lost power shortly after 11:50 Monday night.
Portions of downtown Rochester and northwest Rochester were impacted by the power outage.

The RPU news release says the large outage was caused by an equipment failure at the utility provider’s Cascade Creek Substation, which is located on the northwestern edge of the Hwy. 52/Civic Center Dr. interchange
“Insulation on a current transformer failed, creating an electrical arc that produced a loud noise and damaged nearby equipment,” RPU Communications Coordinator Tom Jorgenson said.
