Can We Talk About this Really Weird Change Target Quietly Made?
I noticed not too long ago that Target made a change to how they charge us for a particular item. I was at the self-check-out and when I scanned the item, I noticed it.
It's a super weird change, but after a quick Google search, it looks like this change has happened in the past! Only it happened at particular stores.

Target Now Charging Bananas 'By the Each'
Bananas are always a cheap fruit, so I'll pick some up here and there. I was buying one bunch a few weeks ago, went to the check-out, typed in 'banana', and put the bananas on the scale.
But then the window popped up asking how many. I was so confused. I thought, 'Ummm, I'm buying one bunch? Is that what this wants?' Nope. Because then it popped up as 29 cents.
That was when I realized that Target was now charging per BANANA, not per POUND.
That's weird, right? If you're buying bananas in a bunch, it just makes more sense that it would be charged by the pound.

I did a quick Google search to see if anyone else had noticed this or was talking about it, and realized that this also happened 7 years ago!
Target Has Charged Bananas 'By the Each' Before
Turns out, in 2018, at regular Target stores, not Super Target locations, Target decided to start selling bananas by the banana, and, according to the Detroit Free Press, people freaked out about it.
But not because of the price or anything like that, but because of the 'by the each' phrasing.
That's fair, 'by the each' is really bizarre and definitely not grammatically correct. USA Today even did a story about it. But it looks like no one was talking about why they decided to charge per banana instead of per pound.
In 2018, when Target spokeswoman Kate Decker spoke with the Detroit Free Press, she said, "This is not a new initiative'", making it sound like other stores have done this before.
I'm going to believe her that this isn't a new thing, but I personally have never seen it before, which is why it weirded me out. Is this weird to anyone else, or is that just me?
