These Minnesota Colleges Named The Best in the State
Lately, the main topic in my house has been college. Not just some casual talk about school, but all things college. We’ve been exploring campuses, squeezing in tours whenever we can, and checking out schools in several states, including right here in Minnesota.
Honestly? It’s been a fun journey. Equal parts exciting, overwhelming, and definitely emotional, in that “how is this happening already?” kind of way.

So when Niche dropped its list of the Best Colleges in Minnesota for 2026, I obviously had to take a peek! Their rankings are based on a deep dive of academics, admissions, finances, student life, and millions of student and alumni reviews.
A few of these schools didn’t just rank high locally, they landed among the best colleges in the entire country, which says a lot about what Minnesota has to offer. Whether you’re deep in college tour mode like we are or just curious where the state stacks up, this list is definitely worth a look.
#5: University of Minnesota Crookston
The University of Minnesota Crookston isn’t just a top Minnesota school, it was also named the 3rd best online college in America.
It’s perfect for students who want flexibility and value. Crookston has a 59% acceptance rate, so it’s accessible without feeling like it’s “open to anyone.” The campus vibe is smaller and close-knit, with plenty of hands-on learning opportunities, both in person and online.
#4: St. Olaf College
St. Olaf College in Northfield comes in at number four on the Minnesota list. Known for its strong liberal arts focus and vibrant campus life, St. Olaf also shines outside the classroom with research opportunities, study abroad programs, internships, and a real sense of community.
Bonus: St. Olaf’s campus was recently recognized as one of the most beautiful colleges in the country, thanks to its scenic setting and historic buildings.
#3: Macalester College
Macalester College in Saint Paul is one of the state’s most respected liberal arts schools, known nationally for its academic strength, global outlook, and diversity.
It’s more selective, with small classes, a focus on international opportunities, and strong community engagement, perfect for students who want a small-class environment with a big academic impact.
#2: Carleton College
Niche ranked Carleton just slightly above Macalester based on student life, academics, reviews, and data.
Carleton College is another Northfield gem and it consistently ranks at the top of national liberal arts lists. Its smaller class sizes, plenty of research opportunities, and focus on critical thinking make it ideal for students who want a challenging, hands-on learning experience.
#1: University of Minnesota Twin Cities
And taking the top spot for Best Colleges in Minnesota in 2026 is the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Not only was it named the best college in Minnesota, but it was also the ONLY MN school to crack the top 100 on America's Best list.
It’s a massive research university with a huge range of programs with everything from engineering to business, biology and the arts. It's a campus of more than 39,000 undergrads. U of M leads in fields like IT and agricultural sciences, and it graduates a very high percentage of its students.
