If you've ever wondered why it's so expensive to fix your cell phone, the state of Minnesota might have a remedy for you later this year.

It's not exactly a secret that the big phone manufacturers out there-- that'd companies like Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and others-- don't really want us to fix our phones, right? They would much rather that we all shell out several hundred dollars to get a brand, spanking NEW device.

I didn't know, though, that they actually went out of their way to almost make it IMPOSSIBLE to fix an existing device by limiting the availability of parts and the tools needed to make those repairs.

But help could be coming to the Land of 10,000 Lakes this year from the Minnesota Legislature, which according to this Fox 9 story, is poised to pass something called the Digital Fair Repair Act. It's a bill making its way through the capitol in St. Paul and ti would force manufacturers to make tools, parts, and documentation needed to repair mobile devices available to more independent repair shops.

This could, in turn, make it much easier for rural parts of the Gopher State to just repair their mobile devices instead of having to always purchase a new one. Fox 9 notes that in the Twin Cities metro, there are numerous independent repair shops that already have deals with device manufacturers. But in greater Minnesota, that's not always the case.

This new law would help remedy that situation, though the cell phone industry is opposed to the measure, Fox 9 said. Officials still believe it is likely to pass the Legislature this session (you can check the status with this handy KSTP Minnesota Legislative Bill Tracker) and if it's signed into law by Gov. Walz, it would take effect on January 1st, 2024.
