Grab the popcorn while you still can, as a major movie theater chain has filed for bankruptcy, leaving Minnesota film fans wondering if their favorite local screens are about to fade to black.

As home streaming becomes more and more popular, the movie theater business is one that has seen its share of challenges. But there are still a lot of movie theaters in business here in Minnesota.  In fact, according to Poidata, there are 197 movie theaters currently operating in the Bold North, even if one national chain has just filed for bankruptcy.

If you're running a business, it's never a good sign if you file for bankruptcy. And if you're running a business and you file for bankruptcy for the second time in five years, it's even less advantageous. But that's what's happening to this national movie theater chain, which has locations here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Investopedia notes that there are two types of bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S.:

  • Under Chapter 7, a company closes, and the trustee liquidates its assets.
  • Chapter 11 allows the business to continue to operate under a reorganization plan.

And according to this USA Today story, Cinemex Holdings USA, which owns CMX Cinemas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, and noted that the company said it would be looking to restructure its business operations.

CMX Cinemas says that it currently operates 28 different locations across eight U.S. states and features over 300 different movie screens. Two of those locations happen to be here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes: The CMX Chateau 14 in Rochester and the CMX Odessy IMAX in Burnsville.

However, if you're looking to check out the latest summer blockbuster, this latest Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing apparently won't interrupt your plans here in the Gopher State. According to a statement from PR Newswire:

'CMX continues to welcome customers to its cinemas as usual, and this will not change during the latest proceedings,' the release said. 'CMX expects employees will continue to receive their usual wages and benefits without interruption,' the release noted.

In addition to its Minnesota locations in Rochester and Burnsville, CMX Cinemas also operates screens in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia.

And while they may seem to be more prevalent recently, especially after a bankruptcy filing, business closings aren't a new phenomenon. Keep scrolling to check out 50 beloved retail chains that also closed their doors and aren't around anymore.
