Head's up if you get behind the wheel at these times on these days of the week here in Minnesota.

That's because a new survey from Assurance just uncovered the most dangerous months, days, and times to drive not only here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes but in every other U.S. state, as well.

To come up with their findings, Assurance poured over data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on fatal car crashes and looked at other factors like the number of licensed drivers and roadway miles in each state, according to data provided by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Assurance then took that data and mapped out the most dangerous days of the week and hours of the day for drivers across the country.  The survey also determined the most dangerous states to drive in overall, based on the number of fatal accidents that occurred in 2020.

And, as the survey found out, crashes are more likely to happen on the weekend, so Assurance also found the most dangerous days for drivers on both the weekends and during the week.

Here are their results for the Gopher State, according to the Assurance study:

  • The most dangerous weekday to drive in Minnesota is Wednesday, accounting for the highest percentage of fatal crashes.
  • For weekends, Friday is the most dangerous day to get behind the wheel in Minnesota.
  • The most dangerous month to drive in Minnesota is October, according to the total number of fatal crashes. February is the safest month to drive nationally and here in Minnesota.
  • Overall, the most dangerous hour of the day to drive in Minnesota is between 5 pm - 6 pm, with the highest percentage of fatal crashes occurring at this time across the state.
