"Lead Foot" Drivers Still Common In Olmsted County

Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Despite stepped-up enforcement and tons of publicity, there are still a lot of lead-footed drivers on Minnesota roads.

Just in Olmsted County, more than 20 motorists have been ticketed for driving 80 miles per hour or higher so far this month.

According to the citation issued to 27-year-old Colin O’Reilly, he was clocked at 105 mph in a 70 zone on I-90 near Marion April 4th. The Minneapolis man was also cited for open bottle and careless driving. O’Reilly had apparently been drinking and came close to being arrested for DWI as a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol concentration of .067. The state’s limit is .08.

The state trooper who stopped O’Reilly wrote this summary:

I WAS STATIONARY IN THE MEDIAN. I NOTICED A VEHICLE MOVING EXTREMELY FAST. I ACTIVATED MY RADAR AND IT INDICATED 105 MPH IN THE 70 MPH ZONE. CLEAR HIGH TONE LOCK. DRIVER STATED HE WAS SORRY AND HE HAD A LEAD FOOT. I SAW TWO OPEN BOTTLES IN THE BACK SEAT. I COULD SMELL ALCOHOL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. PBT.067.

There were also numerous tickets written for motorists caught driving more than 70 mph.

The State Patrol initiated a crackdown on speeders earlier this year ”due to a significant increase in speed-related incidents in 2020.”

Through March 4th, troopers had cited 13,673 drivers for speeding, more than 2,000 higher than the year before. They had also cited 142 motorists for going 100 mph or higher.
