Grand Forks, ND (KROC-AM News) - Authorities in northeastern North Dakota are investigating a fatal crash involving a stolen police car and a semi-truck.

The Grand Forks Police Department says the squad car was stolen Monday afternoon after officers dispatched for a welfare check discovered the subject of the call was wanted on an arrest warrant and he fought back when they moved to take him into custody. A statement says, at one point, the man broke an officer’s holster in an apparent attempt to grab an officer’s gun before he managed to break free and steal the law enforcement vehicle.

Moments later, witnesses reported the squad car was speeding north on I-29 when the driver veered into the path of a southbound semi-truck and caused the head-on collision that claimed his life. His name has not been released.

Grand Forks Police reported the semi driver was not hurt.
