The season ended Tuesday night for both the Mayo and Lourdes baseball teams, while Chatfield earned a spot in the State Tournament with two exciting wins at Mayo Field.

The Spartans lost their bid for a second straight trip to the State Tournament when Lakeville South rallied from a 5-1 loss to win the second game in a Section One Class 3A double-header championship round 8-5 Tuesday night in Red Wing.

Jackson Douglas was strong on the mound in the first game as Mayo kept their State Tourney hopes alive by defeating a Lakeville South squad that edged the Spartan 2-1 in an 8-inning contest on Saturday.

The Cougars offense recovered in the second game and took advantage of Mayo errors to jump out to a 6-0 lead before Mayo rallied late in the game when Brad Mathiowetz hit a 2-run homerun to put the Spartans on the board. It was his 18th home run of the season, which means Mathiowetz ended his high school career one home run short of tying the state record.  Mayo eventually narrowed the lead to three runs, but a 7th inning effort fell short and Lakeville South advanced to next week's State Tournament.

In Class 2A, Lourdes needed two wins over Kasson-Mantorville to survive, but the Komets managed to edge the Eagles 3-2 in a 10 inning contest at Hudson Field to end Lourdes season.

In the Class A Section Championship, Chatfield game through the elimination bracket and beat Wabasha-Kellogg twice to advance to the State Tournament. Chatfield managed to edge Wabasha-Kellogg 3-2 in the first game and then took 9 innings to win the second contest 4-3 at Mayo Field.
