Mayo High School all-conference catcher Brad Mathiowetz has been named a finalist for the 2014 Minnesota Mr. Baseball award.

Mathiowetz has been enjoying a standout year with the Spartans, who are still fighting for a chance to represent Section One in the upcoming state tournament for a second straight year.  In Saturday's action at the Section Final Four Tournament, the senior slugger went 6-8 and hit two homeruns in games against Lakeville South and John Marshall.

Mathiowetz has now hit 17 homeruns this season and still has a shot at reaching the state record of 19 with at least one more game to play for the Spartans.

Mayo lost 2-1 to Lakeville South in an extra inning game on Saturday before overwhelming JM 17-4 to eliminate the Rockets from the tourney.

Mayo will face Lakeville South again Tuesday evening and have to win twice to advance to the state tournament.
