It cost a dollar to vote, and 12 people showed up to elect Cormorant, Minnesota's first mayor, "Duke."  Duke is a 7-year-old Great Pyrenees and will serve a one-year term after he's sworn in this Saturday.

Richard Sherbrook, who owns the Cormorant Store, came in a distant second in the election and doesn't harbor any ill will toward Duke, adding, "...he'll do a good job representing the community."

Duke isn't the first animal elected mayor in the United States.  In Talkeetna, Alaska "Stubbs" the cat has been mayor for the past 17 years.  Stubbs actually survived an assassination attempt by a dog last year.

Good luck, Mayor Duke!
