COVID-19 cases are on the rise everywhere, but we are seeing record numbers here in the Rochester area.

According to the Olmsted County website, "last week, total cases doubled from the previous week (460) marking it the highest week yet. This past week we averaged almost 66 new cases per day. In addition to increased transmission, we are also continuing to see more cases being reported that they do not know where transmission has occurred, indicating more wide-spread community transmission."

With that being said, it's no surprise that all the powers that be, are recommending you avoid your usual Thanksgiving routine - yes, that includes in-person shopping and huge family gatherings.

The Minnesota Department of Health, Olmsted County, and the CDC are all recommending lower-risk activities, such as:

  • A small dinner with the people who live with you.
  • A virtual dinner and sharing recipes with friends and family.
  • Shopping online, rather than in person, on the first Friday and Monday after Thanksgiving.
  • Preparing traditional family recipes for family and neighbors, especially those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and deliver them in a way that doesn't involve contact with others.

They recommend you avoid these and other higher-risk activities:

  • Shopping in crowded stores, especially just before, on, or after Thanksgiving.
  • Attending or participating in crowded races or parades.
  • Attending large indoor gatherings with people who do not live with you.
