Collegeville, MN (KROC-AM) -  A funeral was held Wednesday for pop music legend Bobby Vee.

The service took place at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, not too far from the St. Cloud-area home where Vee had lived the past 35 years. He died last week from advanced Alzheimer’s disease at age 73.

His career spanned decades and included 38 top-100 hits after the Fargo native gained fame as a fill-in at a concert following the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper in 1959.

Governor Mark Dayton issued a formal proclamation listing Vee's many accomplishments and officially declaring Wednesday “Bobby Vee” day in Minnesota.
