The Minnesota Department of Transportation is gearing up for the busy highway construction season.

Most residents of Minnesota know there are only two seasons, winter and road construction, and the latter will be getting underway in a matter of weeks.

Mike Dougherty, a.k.a. MNDOT Mike, is the spokesperson for the Department of Transportation in southeastern Minnesota and says some preliminary work on one of the largest projects planned this year will begin next month at the junction of Highways 52 and 63 in Rochester. Construction crews will be replacing and widening the bridge decks on the Highway 52 bridge over Highway 63 in a project that will create major traffic disruptions this summer. While some of the work will begin in April, Dougherty says the work that will require lane and ramp closings will wait until after the end of the school year.

The list of projects planned in the region is long, and includes a new coating of black top on a section of Highway 52 between Rochester and Zumbrota.

Dougherty is a regular guest on KROC-AM, appearing monthly with Tracy McCray and Andy Brownell during the Rochester Today show from 10-11 a.m.
