Rochester Area Sees First COVID-19 Death in About 4 Months
While the Minnesota Department of Health did not report any additional coronavirus-related deaths today, Olmsted County recently experienced its first COVID-19 death since late last year.
Olmsted County Public Health says the death involved a Hispanic woman in her late 50s who lived in a private residence and died after she was hospitalized late last month. It was the 98th coronavirus-related death in Olmsted County since the beginning of the pandemic.
Prior to her death, Olmsted County had not experienced a COVID-19 death in about four months. Officials noted a death was reported last month, but it actually occurred back in December.
Hospitalizations involving people sickened by the new viral illness continue to decline after peaking in mid-April. The State Health Department says the overall number of COVID hospitalizations has dropped below 500 for the first time since April 5th. The number of ICU beds used by COVID-19 patients has dropped to 133 after peaking at over 200 on April 22nd.
