Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester City Council will be certifying the city's preliminary 2021 property tax levy at its meeting on Monday.

City Administrator Steve Rymer is recommending the City Council set the preliminary levy at just over $79.5 million, which matches the city's 2020 property tax levy. The certification of the preliminary levy sets the maximum amount of local property tax revenue the city can collect next year. Because the city's net tax capacity is projected to continue growing, the zero-percent increase in the levy should result in lower taxes for many Rochester property owners.

The budget proposal that was recently presented to the City Council by the city administrator calls for reducing operating expenditures by about $18.7 million and capital improvement spending by about $79 million, which would put the city's overall 2021 budget at about $476 million.

The City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on December 7th before the final 2021 budget and property tax levy is adopted.
