Rochester Fatal Shooting Connected to Apparent Drug Deal
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The shooting that left a Rochester man dead Friday was apparently the result of a “drug deal gone bad.”
That’s the latest from the Rochester Police Dept.
Capt. Casey Moilanen says video surveillance shows 18-year-old Robert Salley getting into a car at The Quarters Apartments around 2:00 PM Friday. The video shows him getting out of the car a short while later and start to walk away. He then stopped and began firing at the car.
The man in the car got out and fell to the ground where he died. He was identified as 24-year-old Trevor Boysen.
Moilanen says Salley - who lives at The Quarters - fled on foot but was caught an hour later at the Oak Terrace mobile home park.
Moilanen credits multiple calls from witnesses in helping locate Salley, who is expected to be charged with 2nd-degree murder. Six shell casings were found at the scene.
The criminal complaint filed against Salley says he told investigators he and the victim exchanged “money and marijuana” and then the other man pulled out a gun. Salley says the man told him he “had a bounty on his head.” Salley said the two fought over the gun and it “went off approximately three times inside the car.” He said Boysen then “got out or fell out of the vehicle.” Salley says he began walking away and “shot at the vehicle at least once.”
Salley was arraigned Monday on a 2nd-degree murder charge and his bail was set at $2,000,000. He is currently on probation for a gun-related incident in 2018.
Court records show Salley was a passenger in a car that was pulled over in Minneapolis for a traffic violation. He took off running but was caught. Officers found a loaded handgun in his pants. He was given a stayed 5-year prison and ordered to spend several months at the juvenile correctional facility in Red Wing.
