Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A Rochester man was arrested Sunday on charges of assaulting his son and driving while intoxicated - after ditching his car and hiding in a Byron area field with his 4-year-old daughter.

The man’s 15-year-old son called 911 around 12:30 am Sunday to report he had just jumped out of his father’s car at the intersection of 2nd St SW and Highway 52. The teen told police his father began punching him in the face while driving on Highway 52 and that he was drunk.

Police were able to determine the man had driven to Byron and located the vehicle but there was no sign of the man or his daughter.  A State Patrol airplane helped locate the man in a field on the south side of Highway 14 and he was arrested around 2:30 am.

Police say it was 40 degrees at the time and the man’s daughter was wet, cold, and crying. She and her 15-year-old brother were taken to the hospital while their father went to jail.

Facing DWI, assault, and child endangerment charges is 37-year-old Michael Emmers.
