Rochester Man With History of Domestic Violence is Headed to Prison
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man with a history of domestic violence has been sentenced to over three years in prison for a stalking conviction.
29-year-old Derrick Mays was given the 42-month prison sentence today after he pleaded guilty to the felony count on Monday through a plea agreement that resulted in the dismissal of three felony domestic abuse-related charges and a charge of fleeing police in a motor vehicle. All of the charges stemmed from incidents that occurred last July.
Mays was accused of using his car to block another vehicle in the former Kmart parking lot in southeast Rochester and attempting to smash in a window in an effort to get inside. The police report on the incident indicated a passenger in the car was a woman who had obtained a court order preventing Mays from having contact with her. After the driver managed to get away from him, Mays was accused of chasing it until the driver stopped in a nearby parking lot, where he made another attempt at breaking out a window.
When police officers arrived at the scene, Mays got away by driving through a residential neighborhood at a high rate of speed. The officers involved decided not to pursue him and later took him into custody after he was located at an apartment.
