Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Police Department is ready to kick-off a new community engagement initiative that has been in the planning stages for months.

The inaugural Safe City Night gathering will take place from 6 until 8 o’clock this evening at East Silver Lake Park. Five more similar events are scheduled throughout the summer at different locations in each of Rochester’s Wards and will include free food and activities.

Rochester Police Chief Jim Franklin says community members are encouraged to attend and take advantage of an opportunity to connect with neighbors and the law enforcement officers who patrol their neighborhoods. Mayor Kim Norton and members of the City Council will also be participating in the gatherings.

Police Franklin states, “RPD believes that community engagement is critical to the success of protecting and serving the Rochester community. The Department believes that it is the responsibility of all to be engaged with the community, not just a select few. This includes the Chief, sworn officers, and civilian staff. RPD believes that community engagement is strengthened through strong partnerships that are built through trust, collaboration, and respect. ”

A completing list of the locations and times for each of the Safe City Nights can be found on the City of Rochester website.
