Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester’s FIRST Tech Challenge team competed this weekend at its first ever world championship event in St. Louis.

The team - known as the Robot Squad - finished 10th out of the 64 teams in their division for robot performance. The team was also a top 5 finalist for the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award out of the 128 teams that were competing this weekend.

FIRST Tech Challenge Tournament Director Mark Schleusner says although FIRST does not provide teams exact ranking numbers it would be safe to estimate the team finished in the top 25 teams in the world.

The Rochester team is made up of 8 students from Century and Mayo high schools and a 7th grader from Kellogg Middle School.

The FIRST program - which stands for First Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology - was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology.

The Robot Squad team members are: Claire Schleusner (sophomore, Mayo HS), Lucas Iezzi (sophomore, Century HS), Weston Fyles (sophomore, Century HS), Michael Thomas (sophomore, Century HS), Nathan Kanzelman (sophomore, Century HS), Nathan Marks (sophomore, Century HS), Josh Pearson (sophomore, Mayo HS), Matthew Pasch (sophomore, Century HS) and Jonathan Blixt (7th grade, Kellogg MS).
