Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Among the latest scams reported to the Rochester Police Department is one that involved the well-known Best Buy Geek Squad.

RPD Capt. Casey Moilanen says a 69-year-old Rochester woman who needed some technical assistance decided to do what most people do - she “googled” for help.

Among the links that popped up on her screen was one to the “Best Buy Geek Squad.” Or so she thought.

Moilanen says the woman opened the link and was soon conversing with a man who agreed to help - for a fee. He was able to convince her to send him two $500 payments. Moilanen says shortly after the money was sent the woman realized the "link" she had opened was not legit and she was out of $1,000 and she called his department.

Moilanen says there are numerous scams like these making the rounds and urges caution when opening links that may appear to be the real thing.
