Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A toddler was almost killed in a traffic accident in rural Olmsted County Monday afternoon that was caused by a man suspected of being high on drugs.

Olmsted County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Behrns says an SUV driven by 38-year-old Joshua Jacobson failed to stop at the intersection of 85th St and 70th Ave NE around 4:00 PM and collided with another vehicle.

Behrns says Jacobson crashed into the rear passenger door area where 3-year-old Evelyn McKenzie was in a child safety seat. She was no longer breathing when a deputy arrived and began CPR until her pulse was restored and she was revived.The young girl was flown to St. Mary Hospital. The car she was in was driven by her mother, 34-year-old Kathryn McKenzie of Elgin. She was also taken to St. Marys.

Jacobson told deputies he had smoked methamphetamine two days earlier but showed signs of impairment at the scene. The Chatfield man was taken into custody for violating his probation. A blood test was taken and the results are pending. Behrns says Jacobson is a known drug user.
