Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A former Rochester man has been acquitted of four felony charges stemming from a woman's claim that she was sexually assaulted as a teenager 25 years ago.

The trial of 40-year-old Rashad Norwood ended late last week with an Olmsted County Jury finding him not guilty of first and third-degree criminal sexual conduct and false imprisonment charges. The charges were filed against Norwood and 40-year-old Derrick Shumpert two years ago after the woman approached local authorities with the rape allegations. Both Norwood and Shumpert were also teenagers at the time.

Shumpert was also scheduled to go to trial last week but he entered into a plea agreement and entered Alford pleas to a felony false imprisonment charge, a gross misdemeanor county of criminal sexual conduct and a misdemeanor assault charge. The plea means he doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him. Shumpert is scheduled to be sentenced in late January.

Norwood remains behind bars. He is currently serving a 14-year sentence for a conviction on federal drug charges. He has previously served two other prison terms for drug offenses and was sentenced to 15-years in prison for a murder conviction in Blue Earth County in 1999.
