TSA Bans Popular Item From Checked Bags In Minnesota
Traveling soon? Headed out for a vacation this summer? You'll want to know about this new change from the TSA.
I know the basic rules and regulations when it comes to what you can and can't pack in your carry-on but there's so many rules when it comes to checked bags, it can be hard to keep up.
The recent REAL I.D. requirements have have been top of mind over the past few months so this new change from the TSA has fallen under the radar.
TSA has now banned a popular item from checked baggage, so you can no longer throw it in your suitcase and forget it.
TSA Bans This Very Popular Item From Checked Bags In Minnesota
This change quietly happened in early May, with the TSA announcing that portable chargers powered by lithium ion batteries are no longer allowed in checked bags. Instead, you must bring them in your carry-on bag.

They give even more insight on the official TSA website, writing:
Spare lithium batteries, which include both power banks and phone chargers, are prohibited in checked luggage.
If you are unsure if your portable charger does or doesn't fit the bill, it's best to not pack one at all or bring it in your carry-on and risk having to toss it out before you get through security. Better safe than sorry!
Why Portable Chargers With Lithium Ion Batteries Are Now Banned From Checked Bags
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, lithium ion batteries can overheat and cause a process called thermal runaway, which can happen without warning. This happens for a multitude of reasons as well.

Thermal runaway can happen because of manufacturing defects. It can also happen if your battery pack is damaged, exposed to water or packed improperly. With that said, it's obvious why portable chargers with lithium ion batteries are banned from checked bags.
Why Portable Chargers With Lithium Batteries Can Be Brought On The Plane
You might be wondering why these items would be allowed on an airplane with everything that can go wrong. As someone who is scared of traveling, I had that thought myself.
The FAA says this is because all flight crews know how to 'recognize and respond' to lithium battery fires in the cabin. (Okay, new fear unlocked). You're also likely to notice if something is going wrong with yours, whereas you can't when it's in a checked bag.
