Canton, MN (KROC AM News) - Fire and other public safety officials remain at the scene of what may have been a deadly overnight fire in rural Fillmore County.

It was reported around 1 a.m. by a passing motorist who spotted flames coming from a home on an Amish farm located a mile north of the town of Canton.

Firefighters had to endure bitterly cold weather and a lack of water service at the site and it took several hours to bring under control.

Fillmore County Sheriff Tom Kaase says there were two adults outside the home when firefighters arrived and they were transported to a La Crosse hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and other injuries. Kaase says a third adult was later taken by private vehicle to the hospital. Kaase says as of noon, there were two adults still unaccounted for.

An excavator is currently working to clear debris so firefighters can begin looking for any victims.

Kaase says the two story home that caught fire was located between two other houses on the farm. The fire caused some exterior damage to one of the other homes.

Kaase says it’s too soon to determine the cause of the fire.
