When the 13th-ranked Gophers beat 5th-ranked Penn State last Saturday, there was one subtle way the U of M announced they should be taken seriously.

This year's University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team is something special. (And I say that as a noted Wisconsin fan.) They're in the middle of the third-longest winning streak in the nation, having won 11 games in a row (if you go back to last season.) They're also ranked 7th in the nation in the latest college football poll, the highest they've been ranked since 1962.

So, yeah, it was a pretty big deal when Minnesota hung on to beat Big Ten rival Penn State at TCF Bank Stadium last Saturday. And in typical 'Minnesota Nice' fashion, the U got a in subtle dig at Penn State right after the game.

Even though I was watching the post-game festivities on ABC from the comfort of our recliner, I didn't catch what happened Saturday. But according to this post from GopherHole.com, a U of M sports site, as the throng of over 51,000 stormed the field right after the game ended, the sound crew at TCF Bank Stadium cued up the song, 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' by 60's group, the Tokens, and played it over the stadium sound system.

A little dig, of course, at mighty Penn State-- whose mascot and nickname is the...wait for it... Lions. (The Nittany Lions, specifically, but still the Lions, mind you.) And yeah, as all of Minnesota (and the rest of the country) now knows, those Lions DID sleep Saturday afternoon. Maybe it was only a cat nap, but it was enough for another W in a magical season for the Gophers. Row the boat, baby!
