Elementary schools in Olmsted County will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate “International Walk To School Day”, this Wednesday October 8th.

Approximately 12,000 students from 17 participating schools will walk to school along with their parents, teachers and community leaders, including Mayor Ardell Brede, RCTC football players and the Honker’s mascot ‘Slider’.   Walkers from the United States will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world for this event.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

Our area’s event is being organized by Zumbro Valley Medical Society Alliance and sponsored by Olmsted County Public Health and Planning Department in partnership with area schools.  This is a Safe Routes to School initiative.
