Just because it's a cold and snowy January in Minnesota doesn't mean you can't still have fun on the ice, like the folks who made this ice carousel just did.

Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Well, these days, it's more like the Land of 10,000 Frozen Lakes. And, as all hearty Minnesotans know, winter is the perfect time to get out on the ice and have some fun. That could be skating, playing hockey, ice fishing, hiking, sledding and more. But how about taking part in an ice carousel?

That's exactly what the crew up at the Red Wing YMCA Camp Pepin and the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center did recently on the ice on Lake Pepin. They created their own ice carousel, and it's pretty cool! According to this RiverTowns.net story, they found a spot on the ice near Stockholm, Wisconsin, and went about cutting a 70-foot diameter circle in the 7-inch thick Lake Pepin ice (which took about two hours to do!)

They then drilled a hole in the disc, mounted a two-horsepower motor on the ice, popped it in the hole, started it, and then watched as the 70-foot disc started rotating! The story says their group of about 12 people even had a fire in the middle of the ice disc and placed luminaries on it after the sun went down, the story said.

At the end of the day enjoying their ice carousel (which actually took place back on January 9th), the group removed all the motor, grill and other items, then Old Man Winter took over overnight and refroze the disc into the solid sheet of ice covering Lake Pepin. You have to see the video below-- it looks really cool. Literally!
