His career was less than a year old when Rochester was hit by the devastating flood of 1978. He was on the air the night the record-setting storm hit the city and joined the staff in providing non-stop coverage of the disaster. After working several years as an announcer, David eventually moved into the News Department. He was named KROC News Director in 1987. David – who is known by many as " kd " - has spent most of his news career at KROC covering politics ( has interviewed every governor from Quie to Dayton ), city government ( from Hazama to Brede ), crime ( from Police Chief James Macken to Roger Peterson and Sheriff Charles Von Wald to Dave Mueller ) and the courts where he has known most of the judges, prosecutors. defense lawyers and support personnel since the late 1980's. His professional highlights include interviews with Chief Justice Warren Burger and Paul Harvey and news conferences with President Reagan, Jordan’s King Hussein, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and John McCain. David describes his meeting with William F. Keough the most notable interview of his career. Keough was among the 52 Americans held hostage by students and militants in Iran for 444 days ( November 4, 1979 – January 20, 1981 ). Keough made a brief visit to Rochester shortly after his release ( reporters met him at Lourdes High School ) and gave an extensive interview about his captivity. David has experienced the major changes the radio industry has gone through during his years at KROC, beginning with manual typewriters and teletype newswire machines to digital newscasts and online offerings of news and information. ( As an announcer, he used to sign the station off the air at midnight on Sundays until it went 24/7 ) He has been part of KROC’s morning show for more than 20 years and was involved in the station’s coverage of such major events as the first Gulf War, 9/11, local disasters such as the floods of 2007 and 2010 and every political election since 1980. Besides his love of news, David enjoys gardening, visiting historical sites around the country, cooking and music. David is a Rochester native ( Mayo High grad ) who served four years in the Navy ( 1972 – 1976 ) before attending Brown Institute and beginning his radio career. He and his wife Cindy have been married since 1983 and are the parents of two sons.
