Everyone seems to have a preference in the type of house that they like. Some love the white trim, stainless steel appliances and modern look of a house that was built yesterday. Others prefer the details in the handcrafted woodwork that includes pocket doors, arched doorways, and charm from 100+ years ago. When it comes to "Historic Charm", the state of Minnesota is one of the best places to buy.

The 100+ Year-Old Home in Iowa That I Called Home

I grew up in a house with all of the historic charm listed above. It was built in 1905 in the town of Fort Dodge, Iowa and had the most amazing woodwork throughout the home. When my parents bought this house, that was about the only good thing the house offered. It was vacant for quite some time, what we would call "squatters" today were living in the home, it had no electricity, and when we saw the house for the first time we were told not to touch the garbage (or anything else) and to ignore the graffiti and swear words spray painted on the walls.

Why did we move? I asked that question every day for awhile but now understand that this move happened because the interest rates in the 1980's escalated just a tad. #ThatIsAnUnderstatement My parents had a balloon mortgage and the interest rate skyrocketed to 19%. Our family could no longer afford the home that we were living in and this "historic charmer" was our new home. Let's just say, it was a true fixer upper and I used my hands to help make some of those fixes happen, including the wrap-around front porch that you can see on the house today. #YesICanDoConstruction
