Y-105FM / Sylvan Learning of Rochester Teacher Tuesday Number Six – Lester Backus at Longfellow

We've teamed up with Sylvan Learning to recognize and reward great teachers! And our sixth award goes Lester Backus, a fifth grade teacher at Longfellow!

A Longfellow parent with three students at the school nominated Mr. Backus, saying...

"Not only is Mr. Backus an incredible 5th grade classroom teacher, bringing history and science to life for his students by creating lessons that are meaningful for them and go way beyond textbook lesson and memorizing facts.

Mr. Backus connects with each of his students. He plays a critical role in helping students prepare to transition to middle school and provides great feedback about their strengths and growth areas."

 

"One of the coolest things that Mr. Backus does for the whole school is a play production. He invites all students in 3rd-5th grade to come our for the play, and then writes a play that has a part for every student who wants to be involved. He then holds rehearsals from November-March, almost every Thursday, until the production takes places.

He does all of this in his own time and provides one more opportunity for students to see that school is not only about academics, and he bolsters their confidence to allow them to have courage to put themselves out there and to try new things. He's incredibly worthy of some recognition for all he does for students."
