10 Things True Minnesotans Have to Explain to Outsiders
There is nothing like packing up your life and moving to a new state. There is so much you have to learn. You have to learn new roads, the culture and what natives do. From experience, this can be hard. Only in your state put a list together of things that turn Minnesotans have to explain to folks that are visiting Minnesota. Here are the 10 things that are most often explained. From experience, I've had conversations about all of these topics.
1. Minneapolis isn't the capital
This one is hard to wrap your mind around unless you grew up here. I thought this for the longest time because of how close the cities name is to the state. Maybe this was done to keep kids in school on their toes.
2. Winter can happen year-round
There is a chance that we'll see a snowstorm in August, so never put your coat away. I've even heard a few natives say that winter happens 9 months of the year. Folks that aren't from around here just don't understand that.
3. Flip Flops and Sandals are year-round footwear
I haven't seen this trend as much as the whole Croc trend, but open-toe shoes are a thing here. I'm not sure why, but it is.
4. Snow isn't a reason for the town to shut down
A little snow didn't hurt anyone. I've been told it takes a lot of snow to shut the town down. We have gotten a little snow this winter, but nothing to be worried about. The catch here... there is still time for a big storm to come.
5. Most natives dislike the Mall of America
Everyone I've talked to say they only go to the Mall of America if they have to. I'm not going to lie, I didn't think the Mall of America is anything special. Outsiders don't quite understand why it's not our entertainment of choice, but when you live here, you see it enough.
6. Target is our go-to store
It doesn't matter what state you are in... Target is dangerous. With Minnesota being home to Target it makes it three times more dangerous because we have one on every corner.
7. Minnesotans pick Caribou over Starbucks
Most folks have their coffee house they frequent. All most all Minnesotans will pick Caribu over Starbucks because it is a coffee shop of the north.
8. Uff Da is a must-know phrase
The expression of Minnesota is UFF DA. You can use it to express happiness, sadness, frustrations and any other emotion you experience throughout the day.
9. "Minnesota Nice" is very complicated
This one I can say from an outsider's perspective is so true. There is different levels of "Minnesota Nice." Folks will be nice to you, but sometimes the question is... are they being real or fake?
10. Minnesotans don't joke about their 10,000 lakes
Minnesota is home to more than 10,000 lakes. Most outsiders don't believe that to be true. You don't joke about this because it's on the license plate which means we as Minnesotans are really proud of it!
