A Beesy Day at Rochester’s Quarry Hill Nature Center
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester’s popular Quarry Hill Nature Center has a new item on display.
Employees were busy Friday setting up a new bee hive. It became operational Saturday morning, in time for the center’s Earth Day observance.
Nature Center Public Relations and Outreach Coordinator Lori Forstie says the new interactive indoor observation honey bee hive exhibit has replaced the one that had been on display for more than 20 years. She says this will be the only one of its kind in Minnesota.
Forstie says the exhibit will help explain the importance bees as pollinators.
She says the hive box is set into a replicated dead cottonwood tree which is covered in interpretive clues and nooks housing samples of real bee hives and combs. Its population of bees will be in the 2,000 - 10,000 range
