Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Nearly 84,000 people were invited to National Night Out events in Rochester on Tuesday evening, which was about 8,000 more than the record that was set last year.

Rochester Police Dept. Coordinator Darrel Hildebrant says 438 events were registered with his office. There was a brief threat of storms about the time many of the events began around 5 p.m. but the weather improved right away and activities went on as scheduled.

Hildebrandt says the number of participants continues to grow each year. The number was around 45,000 in 2011 and has nearly doubled since then. He says Rochester’s totals have ranked in the top three nationally since 2008. The city was ranked first in 2014. He says the latest rankings will be released later this year.

Events registered with the Olmsted County Sheriff’s office included around 2,000 invitees.
