Newton, IA (KROC-AM News) - The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department has called off the search for two missing teenagers from Byron.

Officials say Megan O’Keefe and Dakotah Fouts were located Friday morning on I-80 near Newton, Iowa, which is located about 20 miles east of Des Moines. Because they were located in Iowa and they are juveniles, officials say the only information they can release is that Megan and Dakotah are in the care and welfare of Iowa authorities.

Coincidentally, the newspaper in Newton Iowa has published a story about an incident that occurred Friday morning that began a when a State Trooper pulled up behind a car with Minnesota license plates that was stopped along I-80.

The Newton Daily News spoke with the Jasper County Sheriff, who indicated that after the trooper asked the teenage male driver to exit the car and answer some questions, the teenage female passenger got into the driver’s seat and sped away. According to the newspaper, that led to a brief chase that ended less than a mile away when when the car crashed into the ditch along the interstate. The teenage girl was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the teenage boy was taken into custody.

The Sheriff told the newspaper both juveniles are from Minnesota and the car had been reported stolen.
