TOWNSQUARE MEDIA AND THIS RADIO STATION DO NOT ENDORSE ANY FORM OF DRINKING AND DRIVING, PERIOD.

If you've seen the new Heineken 0.0 commercial and you are like me, you probably asked yourself can you actually drink one of these a drive? Well, I asked Faribault's Chief of Police Andy Bohlen what the lowdown is on these NA beers. The short answer is yes you can but no you can't. Confused? I'll explain.

First off, drinking and driving, buzzed driving, whatever the kids are calling it, is dumb AND illegal. Ok now that I've gotten off my soapbox here is what Chief Bohlen told me about these zero alcohol/non-alcoholic beers and driving.

"Nonalcoholic beers are legal to drink while driving as long as the alcohol content is below the level defined by law...The law defines an alcoholic beverage as containing more than one-half of 1 percent of alcohol by volume."

Some NA beers have a low alcohol content that is still above the half percent alcohol by volume threshold set by Minnesota law which would make it ILLEGAL to consume while driving.

Also, why would you want all the extra hassle of drinking as Chief Bohlen puts it, "a green Heineken bottle" that sticks out? The likelihood that you could be reported and stopped by an officer becomes a reality even though your actions may be legal.

Chief Bohlen went on to state that he hoped "common sense will prevail" and "ultimately people need to remain well under .08 BAC."

So legally you can consume a Heineken 0.0 while driving, but in reality, why would you want all the hassle that would come from it?
